Amanda Stiver

Amanda Stiver works on as content editor and is excited to encourage and serve young people God is calling into His family.

Amanda graduated from the Robert D. Clark Honors College of the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Art History. This perspective on history, biblical and non-biblical, along with a heavy emphasis on writing and research has given her skills to draw on while writing for Vertical Thought magazine since it began in 2003.

"God's Word is truth, and that pedigree makes it the finest history book available. It is relevant no matter what age we are or we live in!"

Amanda enjoys gardening, traveling, and listening to and performing music in her spare time, especially the beautiful ballads of the 1940's WWII years.

During a murderous attack at the offices of  Charlie Hebdo , a French publication that specializes in satire, seven staff members were killed along with others in the building and police officers. Specifically targeted were political cartoonists who had created satirical cartoons of, among others, the founder of Islam, Mohammed. Four more were killed at a grocery store in the Jewish Quarter of Paris, targeted because of their Jewish ancestry and beliefs.

I remember that day. It was forty-five minutes before my Art History class and I was cramming my head full of paintings, the names of painters, dates, who commissioned the artist, and where it was currently displayed. I had made flash-cards for all one-hundred pieces of artwork and as I sat there systematically memorizing them I flipped through the stack like a blur. The minutes were counting down. The exam was coming ever closer.

I thought I was being clever. Memorizing a test’s worth of images and information less than an hour before class. Wasn’t I smart?

We started out on our trip, a long cross-continental journey to see family in the Pacific Northwest and western South Dakota, with no GPS unit. Technically we had one, but it stopped tracking at the border of Illinois, dropping us into a void of non-digital migration. What could we do? Luckily, being fans of maps we were well supplied and it forced us to renew a skill we had neglected, map reading.

They stood at the top of the fortress and looked down at the encampment below. There was no way down, no trail unguarded, and the enemy was rapidly building a ramp on which to deploy siege engines and all the might of their forces.

Pluralism. It’s a product of a multicultural, diversified society. In theory it means that multiple cultures, beliefs, and special interests can live side-by-side and flourish in one common civilization (

I recently read an article about atheists using a digital bible called YouVersion to debate against belief in God and religion. One user even explained that she deployed certain passages to prove to Christian friends that what they hear in church isn’t true (Billy Hallowell, “Atheists Are Also Using The Wildly Popular YouVersion Bible App – But For A Very Different Reason,”, November 7, 2013).

The thing is, maybe she’s right… almost.

Imagine yourself in a small, remote homestead in 1906. What crops do you grow? Do you raise animals? Where will you get your water? How do you build your house?

These details may not scream “epic drama,” but in the shoes of a young couple just starting out in the semi-arid plains near Philip, South Dakota they led to a choice between success or failure.

On Patriots’ Day the state of Massachusetts celebrates the bravery of a handful of American heroes who began fighting the enemies of freedom. At that time those enemies were the forces of King George III of England. That’s past history now, and England is no longer the source of tyranny for the United States.
