This letter was mailed to United Church of God members early in February 2013.

Happy Passover, Days of Unleavened Bread and Pentecost! It may be a little early for Pentecost, but I wanted to include all three in my greeting because you have three personalized Holy Day offering envelopes enclosed with this letter.

Did you know that many United States presidents take their oath of office on a Bible opened to a specific scripture? President Ronald Reagan's Bible was opened to 2 Chronicles 7:14, a verse loaded with meaning: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

Where's the good news for our world which is so filled with strife and trouble!?

There's rioting in Africa—right now in Egypt, threatening the integrity of the country itself. There were recent riots in South Africa over the closure of a platinum mine that would put 14,000 people out of work during these troubled economic times.

"Why, O God, why?"

That anguished question cried out from millions of people on December 14 when they learned the unspeakable news that 20 very young children and six teachers had been savagely killed in Newtown, Connecticut. As we unfortunately know from experience, there exists a depth of tragedy that is all but incomprehensible. It is the kind that if one is not firmly grounded in biblical teachings, it can shatter one's faith in both God and all that is good. Such is the depth of evil that visited an elementary school in Newtown. When I heard the shocking news, I—like millions of others—quickly prayed for God's mercy and intervention.

America just largely ignored its most biblical holiday: Thanksgiving.

Good news or bad news? As we move into the final months of 2012, much of what we read or hear in world news could sap us of energy and drain us of hope.

Ever experience a little fear or doubt? In today's age, perhaps the question would be better phrased, "Ever have an extended time when you didn't experience anxiety or doubt?"

With our daily television programs and Internet sites often filled with bad news and stories of a shaky economy, wars and violence, we can sometimes feel like giving up. Perhaps you worry for your children, or conversely, your aging parents. Perhaps you or someone you know worries about making ends meet or about the stability of a job.

Serious students of the Bible know full well that the return of Jesus Christ and the establishing of His Kingdom represent the culmination of this human age. We eagerly desire and anticipate this! As Christians we are urged to maintain a sense of spiritual urgency, constantly overcoming and focusing on daily, continuous transformation in becoming more like God our Father and His Son, our Elder Brother, Jesus Christ.
