March 14, 2013 - In Memory of Dennis Luker, United Church of God President

 

Dennis Luker, 71, president of the United Church of God, an International Association, has served in the ministry of Jesus Christ for nearly 50 years. A long-time administrator and church pastor, Mr. Luker was named president of the Church in June 2010 by the Church’s Council of Elders. Mr. Luker himself served on the Council of Elders for five years in the 1990s.

Mr. Luker has served in senior administrative positions in both the United States and abroad, including previously serving as the Regional Director for Church of God activities in Australia and Southeast Asia.

The author of numerous articles for Church publications, Mr. Luker has pastored congregations and served in ministerial supervisory positions throughout the United States and elsewhere. His last congregational assignment prior to being named president of the Church was in Seattle, Washington, where he also served as a regional pastor for the northwest United States.

Mr. Luker has been happily married for more than 48 years to his wife LeeAnn, whom he counts as an important part of his ministry. He and his wife have two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graduate with a bachelor of arts in theology from Ambassador College in Pasadena, California, Mr. Luker and his wife presently reside in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Why Didn't God Protect Them?

"Why, O God, why?"

That anguished question cried out from millions of people on December 14 when they learned the unspeakable news that 20 very young children and six teachers had been savagely killed in Newtown, Connecticut. As we unfortunately know from experience, there exists a depth of tragedy that is all but incomprehensible. It is the kind that if one is not firmly grounded in biblical teachings, it can shatter one's faith in both God and all that is good. Such is the depth of evil that visited an elementary school in Newtown. When I heard the shocking news, I—like millions of others—quickly prayed for God's mercy and intervention.

Feast of Tabernacles 2012: Fitly Framed Together

This year’s Feast of Tabernacles sermon video is titled: “Fitly Framed Together.” The Kingdom of God is our destination. But, our journey to the Kingdom is not one we make alone. We are collectively preparing ourselves as Christ's bride-to-be. We love, care for and support one another in this shared destiny.

The video discusses the importance of Christ’s vision of the Church. Members from two congregations share their stories and thoughts on how they are increasingly being “joined and knit together” (Ephesians 4:16). As brothers and sisters in Christ, their stories should bring to mind your own calling and inspire you to be adding to what “every joint supplies” (Ephesians 4:16).

The core part of the message is by Dennis Luker, president of the United Church of God, expounding God’s Word and explaining how we can all work together in God’s service as we seek first the Kingdom of God.

As we look forward to God’s Kingdom and anticipate the time when all of humanity will be learning of His ways—pictured by the Feast of Tabernacles—this message will help all of us to be even more committed to serving Christ in everything we do.

El vídeo sermón de La Fiesta  de Los Tabernáculos 2012  se titula: " Un cuerpo Unido En Armonía ". El Reino de Dios es nuestro destino. Sin embargo, nuestro viaje al Reino no es para hacerlo solo. Estamos preparándonos colectivamente para ser la novia de Cristo. Nos encanta, cuidarnos y apoyarnos unos a otros, compartiendo el mismo destino.

El vídeo habla de la importancia de la visión de Cristo para la Iglesia. Los miembros de dos congregaciones comparten sus historias y reflexiones sobre la forma en que están cada vez más " unidos entre sí" (Efesios 4:16). Como hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, sus historias deben traer a la mente su propio llamado e inspirarle para añadirse y ser parte de "todas las coyunturas" (Efesios 4:16).

Feast of Tabernacles 2011: In Pursuit of the Kingdom of God

The 2011 Feast of Tabernacles sermon video is titled: "In Pursuit of the Kingdom of God." The Kingdom is our destination. We look forward to the time when Christ returns to establish His Kingdom here on this earth. It will be a time of great peace like we have never experienced. All of humankind will be striving to live God's way of life.

As the United Church of God, we are striving to work humbly together, as one body, doing His work and preparing ourselves for that time. Continuing on in the commission Christ assigned to his people, His Church moves forward, pursuing His Kingdom.

This sermon video will tell stories of UCG members and their families and congregations from diverse locations. As brothers and sisters in Christ, their stories should bring to mind your own calling and inspire you to more fervently seek the Kingdom. Enjoy seeing how God increased their faith and humble attitude of service—often despite obstacles, trial or persecution.

As we look forward to God's Kingdom and anticipate the time when all of humanity will be learning of His ways—pictured by the Feast of Tabernacles—this message will help all of us to be even more committed to serving Christ in everything we do.
