Victor Kubik

Victor Kubik was named president of the United Church of God, an International Association, by the Church's 12-man Council of Elders in May 2013. He succeeded the late Dennis Luker, a long-time minister and administrator who served as president from 2010 until his death in March 2013.

Mr. Kubik's administration emphasizes a Christ-centered leadership model. His goals as president include following Christ's lead in more fully developing spiritual gifts within the Church's ministry and membership. Those gifts include practicing and demonstrating godly love. A former chair of the Council's media committee, Mr. Kubik is strongly committed to more effectively preaching the gospel, particularly in international areas. An outcome of this focus includes defending and preserving the doctrines of the Church and promoting peace and unity to powerfully fulfill the mission and vision of the United Church of God.

Nearly 2,000 years ago the apostle Paul gave an interesting directive to Christians living in the Mediterranean port city of Thessalonica: "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians:5:17).

What did Paul mean by that?

We live in an age of mass communication. Not only in terms of what is broadcast to us, but in the volume of interpersonal instant communications. Gone are the days of short expensive long-distance phone calls or snail mail. Now there's instant email, unlimited long-distance phone, Skyping, texting, tweeting just to name a very few methods. This is how we receive and generate information with others.

The recent reports about violent protests in Ukraine, which led to the deaths of scores of demonstrators and police, cut deeply through me. I am of Ukrainian descent and born of World War II refugees who fled Nazi oppression decades ago. Today I have many personal ties to Ukraine, given my involvement in supporting victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, as well in western Ukraine where I have helped supporting orphans and street children.

When you're given responsibility and power, how do you respond? As Robert G. Ingersoll famously wrote about the glory of President Abraham Lincoln: "Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power."

Life is not always fair. All of us have experienced injustice. These injustices can range widely from not being given appropriate credit or appreciation, to watching someone we think is undeserving getting promoted, to being swindled with no recourse, and more. Have these ever happened to you?

What am I supposed to think and do?

A shameful benchmark came and went yesterday: the 41st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion. The Court ruled 7-2 that a right to privacy under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment extended to a woman's decision to have an abortion. Since 1973 about 52,000,000 children have been aborted (translation: murdered). This is more than 3,300 deaths per day. These were viable new lives in the womb. They were simply terminated.
