[Darris McNeely] One of the things I stress to the students that I'm teaching at the Ambassador Bible Center is to get serious about God and the Bible – take it seriously in all aspects of their study and their life, and it's good advice – and it's a good principle to help us to understand exactly what it will take to really dig deep into the word of God and to understand what the Bible teaches us, and to understand God and to maintain a faith in God throughout our life. It takes work. It's not that the Bible is necessarily hard to understand, but that as human beings we do have to seek after God and we do need to put in the effort that it takes to really dig out the treasures of the word of God and the knowledge about God Himself.

There's a scripture in Philippians chapter 2 that speaks to this, in verse 12. Paul says to the people – he says, "My beloved, as you've always obeyed, not as in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation," he says, "in fear and in trembling." Philippians 2:12. Work out your own salvation in fear and in trembling. The New Living Translation puts it this way: "Work hard to show the results of your salvation." And again, the emphasis Paul is telling in putting on this verse really applies to our whole approach, and that is we must work hard and make the effort to study, and put in the time. When we do that, when we seek God, when we put in that effort to work hard, we will come to understand the fullness of God's plan and His purpose.

So study. Put in the time. Put aside some of the other interests and pursuits that we might have to read the word of God and to delve into it, and to seek God through prayer. God says in His word that He will be found by those who seek Him (Deuteronomy 4:29, 2 Chronicles 15:4, Isaiah 55:6, Jeremiah 29:13, Amos 5:4). And the last point is to make it a full-time job. It is a job in one sense. It's a calling. It's a dedication that we must have. Get serious about God and the Bible. In our world today, that's what it takes to plumb the depths of the big questions of life and come to understand that there is a God, that He has a purpose, and He is working it out in our lives – and it can be understood through His word, the Bible.
