Have you accumulated junk? Time to clean it out permanently.

Transcript

[Steve Myers] Do you accumulate things? Seems that I certainly do. We were cleaning out our garage the other day. We moved all kinds of things out of the way, cleaning things up, sweeping it out, making it nice – and then you know what I did? I went outside, grabbed all the stuff, and put it back into the garage. I didn't really get rid of much of the junk that was in there, because it seemed like, "Oh, I really can't give up on this." I don't know if you've ever done that sort of thing. Maybe you've had a garage sale. Seemed like we did one a while back. Had a garage sale, and after the sale was done, we had more stuff than what we started with.

And so, when you find yourself in those kinds of situations, it reminded me of something spiritual, in the sense that how much stuff do we have in our lives? How much have we accumulated inside, in ourselves, and with who we are, that is just built up, and we haven't had the courage to get rid of? Sometimes we've just got to take that box that's been sitting there for years that we never use and just get rid of it. It's just taking up useless space. And yet, when it comes to character traits, are we accumulating things that aren't good, and not getting rid of the junk? You see, this time of the year, I think, is a reminder for us – not only about our housecleaning, but Passover and Unleavened Bread – our reminder that we need a regular cleaning. And it's not just sweeping out the garage and then moving all the stuff back in. It's a matter of – we've got to root out those things in us that aren't Christ-like. And we cannot allow those other things to move back in.

There's a passage in 2 Corinthians, I think, that's an important one. It's in 2 Corinthians, right at the very beginning of the chapter. And in The Message version, it says something interesting. It says, "With promises like this to pull on us, dear friends, let's make a clean break with everything that defiles or distracts us, both within and without. Let's make our entire lives fit and holy temples for the worship of God" (2 Corinthians 7:1). When you put it in this context, let's get rid of the trash. Let's get rid of the junk. Let's get rid of those things that are ungodly that have accumulated in our life, and let's get on growing spiritually.

That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
