Everything in this world seems to have gone to self-service. Of what should it remind us?

[Steve Myers] The apostle Paul tells Timothy what the end time would look like.  And in chapter 3 of 2 Timothy, he outlines different attitudes and perspectives of people. And it's interesting, the very first one he talks about is not recognizing that people serve God, but he talks about the very opposite (2 Timothy 3:1-5). He talks about those who serve themselves. And I wonder how many times we consider those kinds of things in our life.  Because in our world today it seems that more and more and more things are self-serve. So you go to the gas station. Well, who pumps the gas these days? Well, you do. Right, it's self-service. And there's so many things in our world today that are just like that. They're self-serve. You go to the carwash, you know, it's self-serve. You drive through it or you pick up the little wand and you wash off your own car. What I'd like you to think about today is when you're in those kinds of situations – you get out of the car to pump your gas, you're doing self-service. When you wash your car, it's self-service. And as we think about those things, ask yourself, "Am I serving myself in other areas of my life?" Because Paul told Timothy self-service was a way to recognize that we're at the time of the end. If we are so focused on ourselves, rather than serving others, we better watch out. We better step back.

And in fact, there's another passage that we can find over in James chapter 3. And it tells us very clearly – it says this: "If you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, don't boast and lie against the truth." And then in verse 15 he says the wisdom doesn't descend from above, but that's earthly – that's a worldly way of looking at things. In fact, he says in verse 15 that that's a demonic way of thinking (James 3:14-15).

So consider that. Consider when you're at the gas station next time, maybe do a pretty quick self-evaluation – am I so focused on myself that I need to change, that I need to rethink my perspective? Think about that when we're doing those things that you know, they're not specifically demonic when you're pumping your own gas, but maybe you could step back and say, "In other areas of my life, am I so concerned about myself, am I so self-absorbed, am I so self-centered, am I taking a selfie with my cell phone, that I get off track from a godly way of thinking?" Maybe just a little minor way to rethink other things in our lives when we're doing those things that we have to take care of. We have to pump our gas, we have to wash our cars. But think, wait a second, in other areas of my life – more specifically, more seriously, am I self-serving in other areas that really I cannot be, that I really got to reach out to God and reach out to others and have that kind of service in my life. Let's think about those things.

That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
