A prayer on a slip of paper gave one man inspiration to stay alive and find meaning in life. How can you know the purpose for your life?

Transcript

[Gary Petty] Here in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 10th, we're having an event that's centered around a simple question: why were you born? It's been said that this is the most often-asked question in human history. You know, we think about the three great questions of life – "Is there a God?", "Why was I born?", and "Is there an afterlife?" – so why were you born?

You know, one of the things we're going to do in this event that we're having, one of the things we're discussing, is the life of Viktor Frankl. Viktor Frankl was one of the most famous psychologists of the 1930s, and he lived in Austria. And he was Jewish. And one day the Nazis came in and took him and his family off to the concentration camps. And he lost everything. He lost his money, his prestige, his house – he lost his parents, he lost his wife. He lost everything, including his clothes, and his hair, and it came down to a number, that was tattooed on his arm. And he said there reached a point where life had no meaning. And he reached inside the pocket of an old, tattered coat that he had, and he pulled out a little slip of paper, and on it was a simple prayer. It was then that he began to realize that life had to have a greater purpose, and he had to live it. And therefore it gave him the will to try to stay alive through the most terrible horror that any of us can even imagine.

You know, all of us have a purpose. God has a purpose for you. And it comes down to, why were we born? And to really answer this question we must begin sat the very beginning of the book of the Bible. You and I were made in the image of God. How were we made in the image of God? Interesting question.

Why were you born? Take your Bible. Study the word of God. Find out the purpose for your life.
