[Steve Myers] Have you ever thought to yourself, "Wouldn't it be great if…" and fill in the blank. You've probably wondered that sometimes in your life. And it would be great if those things could only happen.

You know there's an interesting example of that very thing coming about in the book of Samuel. It's the story of Hannah. Hannah is Samuel's mother and she wondered to herself, "Wouldn't it be great if I could have a son?" And so she prayed about it and she wept about it because she couldn't have children. And she was becoming bitter about it. And so she went to God, and she prayed, and she talked to God over and over and over again, and ultimately God blessed her. In 1 Samuel 1:20 after praying and petitioning God over and over again, here's what it records for us. It says, "So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son and called his name Samuel." So she called him Samuel. 

Do you know what the name Samuel means? It tells us right here in the book. It says, "Because I have asked for him from the Lord." So Samuel means "to ask" and ask of God. So Hannah petitioned God and asked him for a son. She petitioned God for an answer to that question, "Wouldn't it be great if this awesome thing could happen?" Well, you know, as God's people we should follow that example that Hannah gave for us.

In fact Christ says we should follow that example. Over in the book of Luke, Luke 11:9 Christ Himself says, "So I say to you ask and it will be given to you."

So wouldn't it be great if I could have more patience and develop more godly character, if I could only serve God to a greater ability, help me God to be more like You. Are those things we could ask for? Boy, it would be great if we would ask for those things, and we've got Jesus Christ backing us up. So ask.
