[Darris McNeely] One of our Beyond Today viewers writes in with a question, "Who are the 144,000 of Revelation chapter 7 and 14? And specifically, how are they identified?" A lot of people have speculated about this mysterious group of people that in one sense very little is described in the book of Revelation about this group and yet in another sense, we know quite a bit or enough to perhaps make some points of understanding that I think all of us can recognize and appreciate from God's Word.

[Steve Myers]  Yeah, it's interesting—sometimes we skip over what the Bible actually says and it's fun to get into all kinds of speculations, but I think it's most interesting when you really stick to what the Word says. So when you begin to look at what the 144,000, who they are, how they're described, we notice in chapter 7 it talks about those that are sealed. It says the number was sealed, this is in verse 4, 144,000 of all the tribes of the children of Israel. And so the first thing we begin to see is that these were literal people. These were descendants of Israel. And then it goes ahead and lists those…(Revelation 7:4-8)

[Darris McNeely] The 12 tribes of Israel.

[Steve Myers] of the 12 tribes. And so they're listed. 12,000 from each of those tribes, except for Dan. But when you add that all up, if you're a mathematician, you've got 12 times the 12,000…

[Darris McNeely] Which is 144,000.

[Steve Myers] And so you've got the 144,000, that's a mathematical square, a number of completion, and so we begin to see that it's indicating something.

[Darris McNeely] Well, I think also one point to make about the twelve tribes of Israel is that at least at this point in time toward the end of the age, God knows who the tribes are, where they are, and He has that in His knowledge and they're not lost. So…

[Steve Myers] They're not lost.

[Darris McNeely] So it does speak physically about them, but in Revelation chapter 14, the 144,000 are mentioned once again and there we have more information that, in a sense, expands an understanding for us because it says in verse 1 that they have the Father's name written on their foreheads, which implies a relationship with God. Also, in verse 4 it says that these are virgins; they are ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men being first fruits to God and to the Lamb. And so they have a spiritual relationship with the Father and with Jesus Christ, which tells us that they are first fruits and they have made a commitment to God. I think that's the most important thing to understand (Revelation 14:1-5).

[Steve Myers] Right. In chapter…If you flip back to chapter 7 it says, "These are the ones to come out of the Great Tribulation," that's verse 14, "and wash their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." They're converted individuals. They have a relationship with God. They've come out of the tribulation, and in fact, after that it says there are those of all the nations in verse 9, and peoples and tongues standing before the Throne (Revelation 7:9-17). So, those that are saved or in the Kingdom are not just 144,000 like some misunderstand. But there are multitudes of people that eventually will. But Revelation 7, Revelation 14 point out the fact that there are 144,000 of Israel that are converted during that time of the Tribulation.

[Darris McNeely] Look to the Scriptures and learn and draw from what it says as your basis before you make a lot of other assumptions regarding this or any other point of prophecy—especially from the book of Revelation.

[Steve Myers] That's BT Daily . We'll see you next time.

Thanks for another great BT Daily.

I was really surprised 16(+) years ago to learn that House of Israel and House of Judah were separate nations. In fact, the first place in the Bible where the word "Jew" occurs is in 2 Kings 16:6 (KJV), where the House of Israel was at war against House of Judah. Many people today wrongly assume the House of Israel means the Jews who live in the modern nation of Israel, and that the 144,000 of Revelation are "Jews" who convert to Christianity. Both assumptions are incorrect.

The UCG has an excellent booklet called The United States and Britain in Prophecy (which can be downloaded off this website) that explains all this. It tells what happened to all the tribes (originally 13 in all).

Thank you, Mr. McNeely and Mr. Myers for this BT Daily. So just to be clear: the 144,000 are indeed Israelites, not Gentiles; and they possess ALL of the characteristics listed in Revelation 14:4, not just ONE of the characteristics? (because for a long time, I thought it applied to all virgins, all people who follow the Lamb wherever He goes, and all firstfruits to God and to the Lamb, whether Israelite or Gentile?)

Re. Rev. 7:4-8: In the text of this passage the word “of” in the phrase, “…144,000 of all the tribes of the children of Israel…” is translated from the Greek, "ek" which can indeed be rendered, “of”. However, in both The Greek-English Lexicon of the NT translated by Arndt and Gingrich, and The Vocabulary of the Greek Testament by Moulton and Milligan, one of the primary meanings of this Greek word is “according to”, or “in accordance with”. By substituting the alternate reading, vv. 4-8 take on an entirely different meaning, i.e: “...144,000 in accordance with all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed, according to the tribe of Judah were sealed 12,000...”, etc. In Strongs, the Greek ek can also be translated “after” which would render: “after the tribe of Judah were sealed 12,000...”, etc.

God’s physical chosen nation Israel was composed and bore the names of the 12 families of the sons of Israel and the New Testament Church is founded on the 12 apostles as well as the prophets of Old Testament Israel. Since this same governmental structure will be continued throughout eternity in God’s spiritual nation or kingdom—as indicated in the construction of the New Jerusalem (chapter 21:10-14)—it is necessary that the same structure be maintained in the 144,000, the first citizens of that kingdom. The division into 12 tribes is for organizational purposes and individuals will be assigned “in accordance with” a particular tribe and not necessarily because they were physically “of” that tribe.

The plain language of Rev. 7:14 is that these are 144,000 physical descendants of Israel, 12,000 from each of the listed tribes (and not Gentiles). In support of this conclusion is that during the Millennium, Jesus Christ will be Supreme Ruler over all the Earth and all nations. Rev. 11:15. God is going to raise up King David to rule over a united Israel (i.e., both House of Judah and House of Israel). Jer. 30:8; Ezek. 37:21-24. The 12 Apostles will be judges over those 12 tribes. Matt. 19:28. God will teach other nations during the Millennium that He sanctifies Israel. Ezek. 37:24-27. The "raised up" tribes are described as the "preserved ones of Israel" who are "restored" (not replaced or substituted with Gentiles). Is. 49:6. (Isaiah 63:17 speaks about the "tribes of Your inheritance" being returned). Therefore, it is clear that the 12 tribes are on the Earth in the end time and Millennium, they are flesh and blood descendants of Israel (not Gentiles), and the 144,000 come from them.

I think Messrs. McNeely and Myers got it right--the scriptures back up what they are saying.
