We are told that we can have strength but do we use it?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] There’s a memory verse that comes to mind that reflects this “I can do” attitude. It’s in Philippians 4:13. You’ve probably put it to memory; if not, it’s a fantastic passage that we should have in mind very often in our lives. It says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” And it’s a powerful statement, but it’s also a challenge.

Have you ever read it this way – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” – but what do I actually do? Have you ever been in a situation that, it just happens, and before you even can really even seem to have a moment to think about it, wow, there’s this reaction that comes and you handle the situation in the wrong way? And then when it passes, you later reflect on it and think, wow, I didn’t handle that the right way. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, but do I really submit myself to Him so that I do all things with His strength?

You see, all too often, we can do it, but then we don’t do it. And so I think this passage in Philippians 4 is such a good reminder that I should be doing all things through Christ who strengthens me. In fact, this particular passage points to that very thing. The wording is in the present, the present tense. I can do all things, because He is strength in me, strengthening me. That’s what this passage is pointing to. He is strengthening me. He is continuing to work through me.

Now, of course, I’ve got to be submissive to Him. I’ve got to be ready for those situations in my life, that when I’m faced with a challenge that comes, that I’ve got to think like Christ, I’ve got to let His mind be in me so that I am strengthened by Christ in me – so that my first reaction is the reaction that Christ would have. And that’s the ultimate goal. And let’s make that our point in our life, that we are strengthened by Christ, that we can do all things with Christ, that we make every effort possible that in every situation, in every circumstance, and especially the difficult ones, let’s allow Christ to strengthen us and continually help us to do things in the way that He would have us do. Because through Christ I can do it.

That’s BT Daily. We’ll see you next time.
