Last night my two-year old daughter woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible cough. My wife and I heard her on the monitor, and I offered to get up and rock her back to sleep. I grabbed my daughter’s sippy cup from the kitchen, then I flipped the hall switch so that a little light would spill into her room.

I creaked open the door and slowly walked to her bed. As my eyes were adjusting to the light I saw her sit up. I reached out to pick her up, and before I did, she reached for her stuffed mouse in red dress named Baby and her blankey that she calls her “lovey.”

These two bring her comfort. She sleeps with them every night. When she wakes up crying from a dream, she is already clutching these two when I arrive. Yes, my wife and I bring her ultimate comfort, but these are important additional comforting items.

I sat in the darkness rocking her and wondered what brought me comfort. I have trials, stresses and fears. Where do I Iook for comfort during the rocky roads that we sometimes travel down? I know that when I pray and talk to God about my problems and worries I feel comforted. When I reach out He is there to stave any anxiety. It works every time. I have to remember to call out on Him, just as my daughter calls out to me. I can’t just put my head down and try and get through things on my own like I am prone to do. I need to just stop and call on God. Peter wrote,

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you (1 Peter 5: 6-7).

When I start to feel stress and anxiety I can also reach for God’s Word. His Word, the histories written in that Book, bring me comfort as well. “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4).

We, too, when we wake in the middle of the night can call out on God and reach for comfort in His Word. We just have to be humble enough to know that we don’t have the answers and know that our loving Father is waiting with His open arms to pick us up.
