We all want peace; no war, peace without sickness, and just peace of mind. If you want to be filled with fear, just turn on the negative-filled news. It is easy for fear to set in with all the negativity around us; fear of war, fear of the economy, fear of sickness, fear of loss of job, fear of crime, fear of rejection, fear of the unknown. All of these can rob us of peace of mind.

If people and circumstances do not rob you of peace, then Satan is quite busy hoping to steal what is left of your inner joy.

I still remember how excited I was several years ago about a planned trip to the beach. Just days before I could step my feet into the soft, white, sandy beach, breaking news came out that they had detected bacteria that could cause staph in the sand on many of the beaches! Just two days before another planned trip to NYC, it almost became a wash out for me, when a plane crashed into the Hudson River: the very river I was to cross over.

Even our planned, nice getaways can be dampened by the negative and rob us of our peace of mind. What does God want us to learn from all of this? Stay in our homes and become a recluse? No!

Did you know that fear, which is lack of peace, can cause illness? In the article “Emotions - How to Understand, Identify Release Your Emotions” by Mary Kurus published in 2002. Kurus wrote, “Emotions have a direct effect on how our bodies work. Fear-based emotions stimulate the release of one set of chemicals, while love-based emotions release a different set of chemicals. If the fear-based emotions are long-term or chronic they damage the chemical systems, the immune system, the endocrine system and every other system in your body. Our immune systems weaken and many serious illnesses set in. This relationship between emotions, thinking, and the body is being called Mind/Body Medicine today.”

Kurus states that there are two emotions, love and fear. 1 John 4:18 clearly states that “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” It also goes on to state that “fear is torment.”

Peace does not necessarily mean a world without problems and pain. Peace is a state of mind. While it may sometimes seem impossible, inner peace is possible despite the emotional influences from world events, media, negative people, and circumstances. We can access this peace when we look to God rather than looking for peace externally.

In John 14:27, Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.”

Fear did not keep me from getting on that plane and having a wonderful time in NYC, nor did fear keep me from walking on that white, sandy beach—I weighed the risks in both cases and prayed to God for safety.

It is His will for us to have a joy-filled life with peace, because we trust in Him.

So relax a little bit and trust God. Have faith and ask God for peace!
