History is simply the record of events—we are the students, and students only learn when they want to. Politics among nations is not always driven by common sense or by doing that which is best. Vanity, pride, arrogance and stubbornness are ingredients that are also present.

How difficult it has been for each generation to learn that grim lesson. The Bible details the causes of war. Some are desires for pleasure, lust, covetousness and need (James 4:1-2). Isaiah noted that mankind does not know the way of peace, but treads the crooked paths we ourselves have made (Isaiah 59:8). Those crooked paths have brought the greatest misery this world has known—but have we learned to put the drums away?
