Mark Twain once commented, “A good memory and a tongue tied in the middle is a combination which gives immortality to conversation.” We sometimes feel that the examples we can cite from our personal lives are more interesting and dramatic than any examples our fellow conversationalists have to offer. The problem is that when our story trumps theirs, they are defeated.

Sometimes it is best to keep our memories for another time and to allow the other person to share his or her story—everyone benefits. This respect and desire to listen is part of loving your neighbor (Matthew 19:19).

Learning to listen is a vital part of friendship. As James advised, “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak” (James 1:19).
