If he pays attention to lies, his workers become wicked (Proverbs 29:12). If the ruler acts harshly and wrongly, trust and confidence is shattered. Rebuilding trust is a long path compared to the short path of destroying trust. A good ruler sets the pace. He does not expect others to do more than he himself would do. He is fair and just. Those who work for him reflect those values.

A spiritual leader is expected to set the pace for those in his charge. God placed men in positions of leadership, and He does this for the benefit of all (Ephesians 4:11-12). When a leader diligently and carefully follows the footsteps of Christ, his followers will reflect some of the values. If the master is corrupt, there is nothing to stop the workers from being corrupt—except if the worker has a higher standard than the master. Leadership carries with it responsibility. Paul said to follow him because he was an example for them (2 Thessalonians 3:9). Set the pace, and others will follow.
