Whether right or wrong, words just pour out. But someone who really does have the answer usually also is a wise person and knows to use his advice and words sparingly (Proverbs 17:27, 28). Many words turn people away. It seems the one speaking seeks attention and control. Using our words sparingly is the hallmark of a wise person, and others who observe that consider the quiet one as being perceptive.

The combination of a calm spirit and not getting into too many words leads to a respect for the quiet one. That does not mean total silence. It means speaking when the time is right. That might be when your opinion is sought or if everyone is allowed to comment. A thoughtful person observes those around him and chooses the right moment and the right words to say. His comments will be well thought out and full of good knowledge. True value does not lie in the number of words, but the quality.
