For various reasons, some have a fixed idea of a concept or a ready-made theory that he wants others to accept while not being willing to listen to the words of another. How refreshing it is when people can engage in a conversation in which the "yes" person can still say "but" and the "no" person can still say "and yet." Nobody enjoys being talked at and not be allowed to respond. Some seem to have a sense of mission and strive to hold the floor.

The Bible tells us of the value of being swift to hear and slow to speak (James 1:19). That seems to run against our thoughts. If we are usually listening and are slow to speak, we may not get a chance to say anything. The advice from James does not mean we are not to participate in a discussion or conversation. It does mean that we ought to know what the subject is and choose our words carefully. How pleasant it is to talk with someone who has room for new ideas.
