This week the Beyond Today production team came together at our office to tape three Beyond Today programs.

Gary Petty flew up from San Antonio and taped a program called "What Is a Saint?" Steve Myers’ program asked, "What Are the Signs of the End Times?" It’s always a busy two days of script editing and production when we gather every month for these programs.

I taped an upcoming program that asks, “Is the Bible True?” Going through several key proofs of the Bible was a good reminder to the staff that the book we love can be trusted as the revealed Word of God–a living book that speaks to us about God and His great purpose with life on this earth. Jesus said, “The words I speak to you they are spirit and they are life” (John 6:63). Any view of the Bible that lessens these words turn the book into just another piece of literature, causing one to miss the rich spiritual purpose of the Bible.

The discussion led to thoughts about how Hollywood has been treating the Bible in some if its newest films. Earlier this year the movie Noah was released and proved to be a big disappointment to anyone who knows the biblical story and understands it in the context of God’s work on earth. The movie took its title from a biblical character but its storyline came from extra–biblical ideas that had no connection to the inspired record. Hollywood, instead of sticking to the story as told in Scripture, chooses to treat the accounts as myth - thus giving them license to manipulate the story as they choose. The implications and lessons drawn are far from the true record of Scripture.

This month we are looking at another movie coming out called Exodus: Gods and Kings. It is a retelling of the story of Moses and his leading the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery. The movie promises to include eye-popping special effects to portray the plagues and the parting of the Red Sea. Movie technology has come light years since the 1950s when The Ten Commandments was made.

What I will be watching for is how they portray these miraculous events. Will they be shown to be produced from the hand of God, or will they be presented as natural phenomena that goes berserk just as Israel was needing something to induce Pharaoh to loosen the grip of slavery from off their necks? We’ll see.

Where we start with the perspective of the Bible is critical. Take it only as myth, and it is just another old book, merely human, and with no more importance that any other piece of literature. Take it as the revealed Word of the Creator God, and it opens up a dimension of spiritual knowledge found nowhere else. And that’s the story we told in our new Beyond Today production, “Is the Bible True?"
