The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold (Psalm 18:2, NIV).

David is a passionate writer. Throughout his writings he gives us insight into his thoughts and heart. He continually talks about the power, glory, and strength he finds in the Lord. He says that God is his rock and fortress. My question to you today is: What or who is your foundation built upon? We live in a world where Satan is loose and rules the nations. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:4 that Satan is "the god of this age." That alone should tell us something: what not to build our spiritual foundation on. We are not to build our spiritual foundation on the society around us. As a part of this world, we can easily get caught up in what others do and how others act. We can find ourselves taking on characteristics of the world and judging ourselves as if we are a part of this world. Just by turning on the TV or radio, we can be completely submerged in the sins of this age. If we are not careful we will allow ourselves to accept that behavior. We will begin to take on the characteristics of this world because that is what we spend our time on. That will start to be what we are building our foundation on, a foundation that will not lead to life.

Wrong is wrong! There is no justification for sinful behavior. We cannot allow ourselves to be molded into people of this society in the way we act, treat others, and talk. Can’t we see clearly? This is what Satan wants us to do, which is contrary to what God wants for us. Satan wants us to fill all our time with things of this world and leave no time for God. He wants us to build a foundation of sin, acceptance of sin, and discord. He wants us to fall under the sway of the evil one, Satan himself. But God has other plans for us.

"Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, 'Come out of her, my people, so you will not take part in her sins and so you will not receive her plagues, because her sins have piled up all the way to heaven and God has remembered her crimes" (Revelation 18:4-5, NET).

In order to build a strong spiritual foundation we have to build it on things not of this world and ultimately on our God and Christ. We have to come out of the society we live in and set our sight, mind, and heart on God. Once again, as David said in Psalms 18:2: "The Lord is my rock, my fortress." We should build our spiritual foundation on a rock, and that rock is God. Let’s look at what Christ had to say about the spiritual foundations we build.

"Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse because it has been founded on rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house and it collapsed; it was utterly destroyed" (Matthew 7:24-27, NET).

What this means is if we do not build our foundations on God and His Word than we will crumble and fall in every difficult circumstance. In every trial we will not seek out God but will look to the answers of this society. We will try to face the storms of life by ourselves and if we do we will be “utterly destroyed” by those storms. God has a plan for you and me, to mold and form us into His own. However we must display the mind and attitude of Christ for God to do that within us. We must build our foundation on the Word (Jesus Christ) and that foundation will never fall. We must give our time to God and not to this present evil age then we will become citizens of God and not of this world.

"So then you are no longer foreigners and noncitizens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household, because you have been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone" (Ephesians 2:19-20, NET).

God know when we are turning from evil and striving to build a relationship built on Him. That is when we allow ourselves to truly be His. God will do His part if we commit our time and effort to Him and build a strong foundation on Him.

"But God's truth stands firm like a foundation stone with this inscription: 'The Lord knows those who are his,' and 'All who belong to the Lord must turn away from evil" (2 Timothy 2:19, NLT).

Encourage one another to build a strong and unmovable spiritual foundation that is built upon the Rock. And the Rock will make you a member of His eternal household.
