Handling touchy situations is essential to parenting. How do you talk to your teens or children about questionable moralities?
Where possible, use popular culture to connect with God's plan. We should not overreact or lash out verbally if our adolescent son or daughter mentions an interest in or connection with something that is of questionable morality. All young people are sorting through complex and confusing issues in life.
Instantly berating them may damage or destroy the special relationship you have with them. Avoid appearing horrifi ed or shocked. Maybe suggest that theirs in an interesting viewpoint and you would like to discuss it further with them. Walk through the situation with them and tactfully explain God's truth as you go. Avoid the tendency to lecture.
Talk with them about the full scope and ramifications of what they are dealing with—anything from thinking of having a tattoo to questioning the merits of honesty.
The key again is to connect them to God's way from where they are, not from where we are.
Deuteronomy 6:7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
See All... implies teaching in many different contexts. Understanding how life affects each child uniquely is necessary to effectively help them connect with their Creator. GN
