A Radically New Version of Humanity
A commentary by John Ross Schroeder
Good News magazine Senior Writer, United Kingdom
Some scientists, futurists
and inventors are predicting an utterly new type of human being for the
relatively near future. According the these people, this brand new version
of humanity will benefit from a radical life extension due to reversing
the aging process, correcting defects in our DNA and creating enormous
super intelligence.
It is foreseen that "We'll have both the hardware and the
software to recreate human intelligence by the end of the 2020's" (New
Scientist, 24 September). Ultimately, it is even predicted that
our bodies and brains will merge with our technology through "nanobots" (blood-cell-sized
robots) swimming around in our bloodstream.
Frankly the missing dimension in this scientific scenario is the lack
of improvement in human character. One idea is that new drugs will be
developed that will enable us to eat as much as we want without gaining
weight. This misleading concept militates against the very purpose of
our human existence.
Exponentially greater intelligence and much longer lives coupled with
defective character will only worsen conditions in an already troubled
and chaotic world. Intellectuals dream about the perfection of the human
species, but not through the means of building right moral character.
What we should be focusing our minds on is: Why has God created us
and put us on this earth in the first place? Why are we here?
The answers to these and other related questions are revealed in the
Bible. It too talks about a new and enormously better race of transformed
human beings. As the Scriptures reveal, "No eye has seen, no ear
has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who
love him—but God has revealed it to us by His Spirit" (1
Corinthians 2:9-10, New International Version).
Indeed our human bodies have the sure prospect of a radical transformation.
We may achieve the ultimate in perfection—but not through our own
humanly devised science and technology.
The New Testament tells us: "But our citizenship is in heaven.
And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who,
by the power that enables Him to bring everything under his control, will
transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body" (Philippians
3:20-21, NIV, emphasis added throughout).
Jesus said that "... those who are considered worthy of taking
part in that age...can no longer die ..." (Luke 20:35-36,
NIV). Here He gives one of the important keys to entering that eternal
world, often referred to in the Bible as the Kingdom of God. We first
must be converted spiritually and begin actively seeking the perfection of
our heavenly Father (Matthew 5:48).
Receiving that perfection is possible by establishing a right relationship
with the Father through Jesus Christ. This is necessary because, in that
perfection process, "... it is God who works in you to will
and to act according to his good purpose" (Philippians 2:13,
NIV). If we yield to Him, by allowing the power of His Spirit to work
in us, He promises to transform us in heart, mind and body into His ever
living, obedient children (Romans 8:13-18; 2 Corinthians 7:1).
God is far ahead of human projections. He has already set in motion
His plan to transform those who yield to His will into a radically new
version of humanity—a version far superior to anything man has
ever conceived.
"Before the world began, God planned this wisdom for
our glory. None of the rulers of this world understood it. If they had,
they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written
in the Scriptures: ‘No one has ever seen this, and no one has ever
heard about it. No one has ever imagined what God has prepared for
those who love him'" (1 Corinthians 2:7-9, New Century Version).
