"...and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place" (Revelation 6:12-14).
As the frequency of natural disasters seems to increase, it's time to look at what the Bible says about these awe-inspiring events and what they mean for your future.
The boiling complexity of the sun, that fusion furnace that provides us with heat, light and a whole spectrum of other benefits occasionally serves up something not-so-nice. Anomalies such as a coronal mass ejection (CME) can and do wreak havoc with 21st century navigation and communication systems, and have torched electric supply grids in Canada and elsewhere. A mild CME singed the Van Allen magnetic fields of Earth on March 8, reminding scientists and communication professionals of potential major problems.
Hurricane Irene is moving up the east coast of the United States. It is expected to impact the lives of people from Florida to New England. Many cities along the coast have already been evacuated in anticipation of the pending destruction.
When natural disasters loom it is important to remember the words that God inspired: "... The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."' - James 5:16
Please join us in praying for those that will be affected by Irene.
By now we have seen the horrendous damage done by Sunday's massive tornado that swept through Joplin, Missouri, killing more than 100 people. As the residents of this southwest Missouri town deal with the damage and loss our hearts go out to them. Tornados are not unusual to this region. But the size and ferocity of this one is unusual, even to an area which is part of the notorius "tornado alley".
