| 2⁄3 | Cup | barley |
| 1 1⁄2 | Pound | ground beef |
| 1 | medium onion (chopped) | |
| 1 | Clove | garlic (minced) |
| 4 | carrots (sliced) | |
| 3 | ribs of celery (diced) | |
| 2 | Cup | water |
| 3 | Can | beef consomme |
| 1 | Can | tomatoes (28 oz.) |
| 1 | Can | tomato soup (10 3/4 oz.) |
| 1 | bay leaf | |
| 1⁄4 | Cup | parsley |
| salt to taste |
Brown meat and drain off fat. Add onion and garlic, cook until tender. Ad the rest of the ingredients. Cover, bring to a boil then reduce heat. Simmer 50-60 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add water if too thick.
