| 2 1⁄4 | Cup | all-purpose flour |
| 1 | Cup | packed brown sugar |
| 3⁄4 | Cup | shortening (or oil) |
| 1⁄4 | Cup | molasses |

| 1 | Teaspoon | baking soda |
| 1 | Teaspoon | ground ginger |
| 1 | Teaspoon | cinnamon |
| 1⁄2 | Teaspoon | cloves |

In a mixing bowl, combine about 1/2 of the flour with brown sugar, oil, molasses, egg, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Mix together, then add remaining flour and combine well. Shape into 1-inch balls. Roll in sugar. Place about 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375 oven for 8-10 minutes or until set and tops are cracked. Cool cookies on wire rack.
