Ingredients

2 1⁄4Cupall-purpose flour
1Cuppacked brown sugar
3⁄4Cupshortening (or oil)
1⁄4Cupmolasses
1 egg
1Teaspoonbaking soda
1Teaspoonground ginger
1Teaspooncinnamon
1⁄2Teaspooncloves
  sugar

Instructions

In a mixing bowl, combine about 1/2 of the flour with brown sugar, oil, molasses, egg, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Mix together, then add remaining flour and combine well. Shape into 1-inch balls. Roll in sugar. Place about 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375 oven for 8-10 minutes or until set and tops are cracked. Cool cookies on wire rack.
