Delicious shortbread bars have the taste of toffee without the hassle of making candy.

| 1 | Cup | brown sugar |

| 1 | Teaspoon | vanilla |
| 1⁄2 | Teaspoon | salt |
| 2 | Cup | flour (sifted) |
| 1 | Package | chocolate chips |
| nuts (chopped) |
Grease cookie sheet. Cream butter and brown sugar; mix in egg and vanilla. Sift flour and salt; add to butter, sugar, and egg mixture. Spread ½ inch thick on cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes at 350°. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with chocolate chips. Allow to melt (can be returned to oven, which has been turned off, for a few minutes) and then spread. Sprinkle on nuts. Cut immediately (it will be difficult to cut them once they have cooled).
