I have covered the avian flu in several posts over the recent months. President Bush mentioned the potential devastation from this virus last month in his address at the United Nations. Now, the latest issue of National Geographic has a cover story that gives a good overview to understand how this plague could mutate and jump to humans.

Avian Flu-Closer Than We Think

Last week I was giving a sermon on the context of recent world disasters and I projected a scenario of how the next big disaster to strike America could could come from the importation of the H5V1 avian flu virus that has been ravaging poultry in Asia and is responsible for over one hundred deaths. The virus has now spread to parts of Russia and could be spreading to western Europe.

Flu Pandemic Could Trigger Economic Depression

We have had a number of past posts about the possible outbreak of a flu virus that could reach catastrophic proportions. The H5N1 avian virus has begun to spread out of Asia into Russia. Migratory birds have been found infected with the deadly virus responsible for dozens of human deaths in Asia in recent months.

Migrating geese in western Qinghai province have been discovered with the H5N1 avian flu virus. The fear is this virus mutating with a human virus and jumping unchecked into the human population. Over the weekend China ordered emergency nationwide measures to deal with a potential outbreak.
