Vancouver Letter Draws 11.3 Percent Response

At the end of November, the Vancouver, British Columbia, congregation hosted an open house. Along with the letter of invitation to the open house, readers received offers for a booklet and a CD message. At press time 11.3 percent of the approximately 170 readers responded requesting either or both of the offered items. "We did not have any new people attend on the specific day, but did have one new lady, a GN reader, attend a week later," said David Palmer, pastor.

Feast 2006 Set for York, England

For the year 2006, the United Church of God–British Isles will hold the Feast of Tabernacles in the historic city of York, North Yorkshire. We are extending an invitation to our overseas visitors to join us for the autumn festival.

The city's history goes back to Roman times, when it served as the northern capital of Britain. Four main gates protected the walled city in medieval times and they still exist, as does most of the wall enclosing the city.

Below is a list of a few key points of interest the city offers the visitor, both young and old, with most of the attractions in York within walking distance of the meeting hall:

• The Castle Museum, illustrating Yorkshire life during the past 400 years.

• The Richard III Museum in Monk Bar (medieval fortress gate).

• The Jorvik experience dealing with Viking life in York.

• York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral north of the Alps, with option to climb its 275 steps.

• The National Railway Museum, the world's largest and a mecca for railway enthusiasts.

• The Scarborough Flyer, an 84-mile round trip by steam train.

• Clifford's Tower, a fantastic panoramic view of York from the 13th-century tower (144 steps).

• The Merchant Adventurers' Hall, Europe's finest medieval guildhall.

For more information on what else York offers, please visit the Web site of the York Tourist Office at www.york-tourism.co.uk.

The Church is also planning officially guided coach tours to the Yorkshire Dales. This is James Herriot country, described in the beloved books about his life as a country veterinarian. This tour visits some of the places mentioned in his books.

We will also arrange officially guided walking tours of York's important points. The city center of York has numerous restaurants, cafes, tearooms, pubs and many shops, all within walking distance from the Tempest Anderson Hall, where services will be held. There is a vast variety of accommodation available, much of it within walking distance of the services.

From the city of York, Edinburgh is less than 21/ 2 hours away by train, and the nearest international airport for York is Manchester. If you are interested in attending the Feast in York, e-mail feast@ucg.org.uk or write to UCG-BI, P.O. Box 705, Watford, Hertfordshire, WD19 6FZ, United Kingdom, to request more information.
