Can We Be "Debbie Downers" in God's Church?

A few years ago, Saturday Night Live had a skit-series featuring a character called "Debbie Downer." Every time she and her jovial friends had a get-together, the high spirits of the energetic throng would be quickly diminished by Debbie's negative interjection, sending the conversation into a spiraling nosedive and, eventually, awkward silence. It was funny to watch but, sadly, too true in reality at times.

What about us? What do we talk about when we're together on the Sabbath? What do we involve ourselves with and talk about during the week? Would we be described as positive and uplifting, or would we fit more into the "Debbie Downer" category?

There are several scriptures that speak of "the upright"; those who strive to follow God and do His will (Proverbs 15:8). Isn't it interesting that even the very word "upright" illustrates the nature and attitude of these individuals as being "up"? God is a happy God (1 Timothy 1:11, Strong's #3107 "blessed, happy") and He desires His people to be pure and positive thinkers (Philippians 4:8) and to have truthful speech that is interesting and flavorful (Colossians 4:6).

We are to rid ourselves of every sort of negativity that can corrupt our speech and ourselves (Colossians 3:8) for, as Christ warns us, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks; moreover, we will have to give an account for, and even be judged by, the words we utter (Matthew 12:34-37).

Of course, that doesn't mean we should feign a happy-go-lucky attitude for outward appearances either. There are moments in every one of our lives where trials and challenges should first be cast upon God in fervent prayer (1 Peter 5:7) and then shared with one another for edification and encouragement (Galatians 6:2).

By staying close to the One who has our very best interests at heart, we can better ride the waves of difficulty and receive the confidence and courage only God can provide to press on and overcome the challenges we face. We can develop a more positive outlook because, through Jesus Christ, our burden is truly light (Matthew 11:30). We can be able to share with one another all of the ways God is intervening, providing us strength, building our faith and giving us reasons to rejoice in Him!
