The Feast Can Quest

by Dottie Seifert

What if you were blind, retired and in need of money for the Feast of Tabernacles?

Barb Westerviller, a member in the Columbus, Ohio, congregation, fits into all three categories, but she has a unique way of obtaining funds for the Feast. Barb and her husband, Steve, who uses a wheelchair, scour the countryside and streets around their home for aluminum cans.

Due to a degenerative spinal disease and severe diabetes, Steve has not been able to attend the Feast with Barb for five years. As a way to ensure that Barb can attend the Feast, she and Steve try to earn enough money by collecting cans.

They actually travel many miles gathering cans. It is always exciting to come to services and hear Barb say, "I now have enough money for my room expenses." Then, a month or so later, to hear her say, "I have enough money now for my meals, and I am working on travel expenses."

Yet for them the greatest quest is to see Isaiah 29:18 come to completion as we picture at the Feast: "And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness." UN
