The California Supreme Court voted by a narrow 4-3 margin to cancel a state ban on marriages between homosexuals. Massachusetts was the first state to approve same-sex unions. In addition, four northeastern states allow civil unions.

Polls reveal that the majority of Americans oppose gay marriages. And 27 states have passed constitutional bans on such gay marital unions.

An article in USA Today stated: "The California court based its decision on its state constitution. As a result, the decision sets no legal precedent beyond California's borders. Yet the ruling is likely to add momentum to the ongoing legal fights over gay marriage across the country and could reshape the politics of the upcoming November election in California and nationally" (May 16, 2008).
