Facebook recently released a change in its gender identification strategy for its social network. Instead of the standard “male” or “female” designations, users will be able to choose from over 50 additional options of various stages of gender identification…transsexual, bisexual, and so on… (“Male, Female or ‘Custom’? Facebook Announces 50 Way to Define Gender,” Fox News at FoxNews.com, February 13, 2014).

Sigh. Where do we begin?

Aside from the obvious, rejecting the gender God gives us from birth is an affront to His love for each of us.

Aside from the fact that homosexuality and all types of sexuality outside of marriage between one man and one woman are sinful.

Aside from the fact that rejecting the path of human multiplication that God designed through sex in marriage between one man and one woman is to reject God’s plan for expanding His family and ultimately, eternal life.

Aside from all of that, among other things, this news item does give us an understanding of the nature of the society around us and, frankly, that includes every nation on earth.

A measure of the state of the world

The condition of our world is summed up in a several verses from the book of Romans:

“Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God have them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful…” (Romans 1:24-27).

We can easily see the impact of the theory of evolution. A mindset that rejects God as creator and believes that accident determines the identity of all living things. In such a mindset, rejecting the identities God set for men and women, the design for true marriage, and sex in marriage is easily thrown away for more immediate and twisted gratifications. This is the society we see promoted in the media, and now in legislation.

Yet the book of Romans has more to say about other elements of such a society:

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them,” (Romans 1:28-32).

As we see the clues around us in the world and as these evil qualities flourish, it is our challenge to turn to God and ask Him to set our minds straight—to know right from wrong, and to respect what God created us to be.

As time goes on, it will become more and more difficult to retain purity of mind, but it is worth the struggle. The Kingdom of God, which is to say, the ultimate, immortal, resurrected Family of God, is more than worth the price of our present challenges.
