A recent survey by The Folio Society in Britain found that the Bible edged out Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of the Species, 37 percent to 35 percent, when participants were asked to name books that are most significant to modern society. The Bible was considered important because it “contains principles/guidelines on how to be a good person,” while Darwin’s work was chosen because it answered questions about human existence.

Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time came in third. Fiction, including works of Shakespeare, generally did poorly in the rating survey, non-fiction being considered more influential (Daisy Wyatt, “The Bible Voted More Valuable to Humanity than Darwin’s Origin of the Species in Folio Society Poll,” The Independent at Independent.co.uk, November 13, 2014).

The irony, of course, is that, while the Bible certainly provides principles and guidelines for human behavior, (we know them as commandments) it also holds the truth about the origin of humans as created by God in the image of God. Darwin’s work has met with challenge and has proven troubled as a working theory in recent decades, to understand more about this please read, “10 Ways Darwin Got It Wrong.”

The Bible stands as the ultimate and only true definition of moral behavior and authority on how human beings came into existence, the purpose for that existence, and the future of humankind in the Kingdom of God.
