Are you afraid? What does God think of our fears?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] What are you afraid of? I went on the internet and printed out a list of phobias. Phobias are different fears, and they give names to all of these different phobias. You know how many phobias were listed on the very first webpage that I went to? Six pages of names of things that people are afraid of. Here's an interesting one, one is called amaxophobia. Do you know what that is? That's the fear of riding in a car. Then there's the barophobia. That's the fear of gravity. Some of these you probably have never heard of before. Here's a strange one. It's consecotaleophobia. Strange, but it's the fear of chopsticks. That's pretty amazing. They've got fears for everything that you could imagine. All kinds of different things with all of these amazing, scientific, phobia types of names. And here's one I'll try to pronounce: it's called hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. Do you know what that is? The fear of long words.

There's a fear for anything that you could imagine. And if you begin to think about fears, there are some fears that are good fears, fears that keep us safe. But there are other fears that can just lock us into a wrong frame of mind. And God doesn't want us to have those kinds of fears that paralyze us, that bring us to a point that we just cannot act. And so if we think about that, the world has all kinds of names for all kinds of fears, and the world holds these fears against us, and I think in a way preys on us with the fears that are out there, and wants to monopolize us so that we cannot be godly people.

And yet Paul said a lot about it. The Apostle Paul said something amazing over in Romans 8:39, verse 38. Here's what he said, "I'm convinced that neither death nor life," so neither phobia about those types of things. He says, "Neither angel or demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39). You see the world comes up with page after page after page of things that we could be afraid of, but the word of God says there is nothing to fear.

That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
