Is it possible you need to disconnect from your digital life?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] Is it possible to disconnect? Maybe you're like me. First thing in the morning, what do you do? I reach for my phone because I've got my alarm on my phone. And then once I pick up that phone it's really hard not to start looking through it to check my email, and I do all of that before my feet even touch the floor.

Do your electronics govern your life? It seems that sometimes I get carried away with that and can't help but do that all the time, but maybe what we need to do is have a digital detox. In fact, I looked this up on the web a little bit and there are digital detox summer camps. And you can go to digital detox retreats, and they're big bucks. They take thousands of dollars from people to help them to escape all the digital electronics that they have.

But I think there is something to that. I think it can be very serious in the sense that - I mean just think about this for a second - do you have a better relationship with your phone than you do with God? Or maybe you can substitute your iPad or your computer or your laptop or whatever. But does that digital accoutrement, does that govern your life more than your relationship with God?

Well, what can you do? Well, I think it would be a great idea to begin to wean ourselves a little bit from our digital toys. How about taking a 24 hour detox from your electronics? Once a week take 24 hours and just put them away, and take a vacation from your electronics.

Maybe you could call that an electronic Sabbath, to put those things away and not let them rule your life. Instead would it be possible instead of connecting with the screen on our phone or our iPad to connect with our loved ones and most importantly connect with the One we ultimately should have the best relationship with our God?

There's a reminder of this over in the book of Colossians, Colossians chapter 3 right at the very beginning of the chapter. Here's what it says, "If you are raised with Christ seek those things which are above where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God." It goes on, "Set your mind on things above, not on things of the earth. For you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. " (Colossians 3:1-3).

And as I thought about that I thought how oftentimes my life is hidden with all of the electronics that I have whether it's the TV or the remote control or the iPad or the phone. And all too often I set my mind on the wrong things.

So let's make it our goal. This week set aside 24 hours for a digital detox.

That's BT Daily. I'll see you next time.
