We need to be declared dead to sin so we can live a life with Jesus Christ.

Transcript

[Steve Myers] There was a story in the news that took me by surprise. It was about a lady in France who was declared dead even though she's alive. And so, for the last three years or so, she's been trying to get the government to recognize that she's really not dead, that she's really alive. And so you can imagine the challenges if they have on record that you are dead when you're not really dead. What a crazy world we live in.

Now, think about that in relationship to us as Christians. It should be just the opposite way around. When we look at what Romans 6 talks about, we're supposed to be dead to sin, but alive to Christ. And so when we recognize that, you can see this in Romans 6:4, yes, we are supposed to be dead and we don't wanna come back to life this way. It says this, "We are buried with Him through baptism into death." So, we kill that old person, that sinful person. And then it says, "Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life."

And so when you think about this poor lady in France, for us as God's people, we wanna put that sinful person to death. And we symbolize that at baptism. Now, we don't ever wanna go back. We don't ever wanna be declared alive to sin, ever. And so, we can recognize very clearly that we have been declared dead. And let's keep that old, sinful person buried. And then let's make sure we are alive, but not to sin, alive in God living our life by the power of God's Holy Spirit.
