If we can do better, should we not strive, with God's help, to reach higher?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] Have you ever thought, "That's good enough?" How many times have you said to yourself, "Well, it's okay?" The other day, I was cleaning the garage. It was a little nice day for a change, and I had to get a couple of things out of the way, and so I started moving things around a little bit. And in order to make everything fit, I just kind of pushed some things aside, and I thought, "All right, that's good enough." And I stepped back and looked at it, and it was still mainly a mess. And sometimes I get to thinking, "Well, you know, what's the difference? Isn't that okay?" I mean, okay's pretty good, isn't it?"

Well, then I ran across a quote that kind of changed my perspective a little bit. It actually goes all the way back to Ben Franklin, and he said something to the effect of, "If better is possible, is good good enough?" It's like, "Huh." Then I started feeling a little guilty about that, that, "Okay, I can do better." And you know, when you really begin to think about that, it is a spiritual principle, that if we can do better, shouldn't we really strive to do just that?

Paul was advising the Colossians that they needed to do that, to take it to the next level, to step things up. So in Colossians 3:23, he says it a little differently, but he puts it this way. "Whatever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord and not to men."

And so whatever it may be, what a great principle. Is it work? When I go to work, do I really step it up and not just settle for good enough? If better is possible, well then, is good good enough? Can I do better in my marriage? Can I serve others better? Can I take it to the next level, that no matter what it is, if it's even cleaning the garage, can I really step it up and recognize, if I'm doing this to God, doing it for Him, I have a whole different perspective? And really, when I consider that, then I really can take it to the next level and not just settle for good enough.

So let's really strive to do that in whatever situation it may be, in every aspect of our life. Let's step it up and really shoot for the best.

That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
