He won the battle with extra help. What lesson can we learn from the Greek warrior?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] Have you ever heard of the Greek warrior Themistocles? He was quite a man of war. And he was known for a famous battle that he was in. It was called the Naval Battle of Salamis. And everyone expected him to sail at daybreak to take on the foe, but he didn't. He waited, and it seemed that the golden opportunity to attack had passed. In fact, many were ready to accuse him of being a traitor to the country because he didn't jump right out there. Yet, he waited. Now why would he delay? Themistocles knew something that was maybe unknown by so many. And that was the fact that by 9 o'clock in the morning the wind would begin to blow. And so instead of attacking at daybreak, Themistocles decided to wait and harness the power. He knew that the wind would be blowing. And by utilizing the power of the wind, the men who would normally row the boats, those naval ships, would be saved from using up all of their strength in rowing, and then they could turn and be warriors. And they would be able to come at full strength to be able to help with the battle. So can you imagine what happened at that Naval Battle of Salamis? You see, because Themistocles harnessed the power, he won. He won that battle. Now one of the interesting things about this is in this physical sense he harnessed the power of the wind, we as God's people, we as Christians need to harness the power because we have a supernatural power, not just the power of the wind.

But we have the power of God. We're told about it in Acts - in the Book of Acts, we're told about it right in the very beginning. Just after the crucifixion Jesus Christ said something amazing. He said, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth." You see, that's the power that we've been given. Not just the wind, but the power of God's Holy Spirit. 2 Timothy 1:7 says we haven't been given a spirit of fear, but we have been given a spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind. So let's remember - if you can't remember the long name or pronounce Themistocles, we certainly can remember the power of God that we've been given: His Holy Spirit.

That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
