Every few months the media will focus their attention on a story about an average individual who became a hero in a matter of minutes. Maybe they ran into a burning building and saved a child, a pet, or an elderly person. Perhaps they jumped into a lake to save the life of someone who was fighting to stay afloat and would certainly have drowned if help did not arrive.

Most of these heroes will later say they did what anyone would have done. They did the right thing. They just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

What if you could do the right thing, be a hero, and save a life today? Would you do it?

Imagine yourself looking up from the floor of a large theater. You see thousands of people staring down at you. You join a huddle of people, seeking some kind of protection from what is about to happen. You are the entertainment for the day. You are about to be punished for a crime, the crime of being a Christian. Surrounding you are several lions, each being held back by an iron gate. Their blood curdling roars send chills up your spine. The gates are lifted and the lions begin to stalk their prey. They walk about the perimeter, seeking whom they may devour. They run at the crowd of people, each choosing a person of prey and each roaring with excitement, knowing the prey has no way to escape. You and those with you are about to be devoured.

Would you want to be the hero of the day, do the right thing and save all of those with you? While this type of thing  is a part of Roman and Christian history, the same scenario plays out today, each and every day of your life. Did you know there is lion walking about, stalking you, your family, and your friends? He roars with the desire to destroy as many as he can.

In 1 Peter 5:8 we read that we must be vigilant because our enemy, Satan, walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

A hero can be defined as a person who is admired for their courage and noble qualities. Being a hero means doing the right thing even when no one else is watching. It can also mean setting the right example for those who may be on their way to becoming the lion's next victim. As we make decisions about what we will or will not do, others are watching. They may even ask why we choose to live the way we do.  Setting the right example and encouraging them to follow the real hero, Jesus Christ, is what saving a life is all about.

Be a hero to those you love, do the right thing at the right time.
