As we wake up from our weekend slumber we’re aware that Israel has been pounding Gaza for the last three days with rockets and missles. Upwards of three hundred people, mostly Hamas leaders, have been killed in the attacks. Israel is determined to defend itself against the incessant attacks by Hamas against Israeli citizens in its south. Hamas would not renew a recently lapsed ceasefire. You can easily read the details of what is happening. But here is one key thing to watch as this latest skirmish unfolds. Egypt shares a border with Gaza and controls the Rafah crossing, the main entry point to Gaza on the south. it is the only Arab state that has a border with Gaza therefore it bears a great deal of responsibility for what happens there. Radical Arabs feel Egypt may have given a “green light” to the recent Israelu attacks. The Israeli Foreign Ministers made a trip to Cairo to confer with President Hosni Mubarak the day before shelling commenced. Shiite cleric Hassan Nasrallah has called for Egyptians to “take to the streets in their “millions” to force open their country’s border with Gaza. Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon, has a very high standing in the Arab world since he successfully withstood Israel in their 2006 offensive. Watch what happens within Egypt during this siege. If people on the street there get stirred up it could have far reaching consequences in the region.
