When the LORD told Gideon to “tear down the altar of Baal that your father has” (Judges 6:25 Judges 6:25And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said to him, Take your father's young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the grove that is by it:

Fast forward to the famous confrontation on Mount Carmel between Elijah and the 450 prophets of Baal. “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, then follow him” (1 Kings 18:21 1 Kings 18:21And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long halt you between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

The goal, Elijah said, was to “turn their hearts back to you again” (1 Kings 18:37 1 Kings 18:37Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that you are the LORD God, and that you have turned their heart back again.

When Jehu became King of Israel, he invited “all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests … to a solemn assembly for Baal” (2 Kings 10:19-20 2 Kings 10:19-20 [19] Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtlety, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal. [20] And Jehu said, Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it.

Jehu told the worshipers “Search and see that no servants of the LORD are here with you” (2 Kings 10:23 2 Kings 10:23And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said to the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of Baal only.

). Then Jehu had them all killed and “destroyed Baal from Israel” (2 Kings 10:28 2 Kings 10:28Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.

That was short-lived, and in 2 Kings 17:16 2 Kings 17:16And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.

Israel was taken into captivity because they “left all the commandments of the LORD their God … and served Baal.”

The lesson from the Bible is clear: Baal and God are opposites. You can’t do what pagans do and really be serving God. Servants of God are not in their midst. Their hearts need to turn to God. They are not keeping the commandments of God.

God commands: “Take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them… that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods. I also will do likewise.’ You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way; for every abomination to the LORD which He hates they have done to their gods. Whatever I command you, be careful to do it” (Deuteronomy 12:30-32 Deuteronomy 12:30-32 [30] Take heed to yourself that you be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before you; and that you inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. [31] You shall not do so to the LORD your God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hates, have they done to their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods. [32] What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: you shall not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

).

Truly there is nothing new under the sun worship. Most still say “So what! I’m really worshiping my Lord and King.”

As you choose to live according to the Bible, is it the season for you to Baal out?
