A group of four high school seniors decide to skip classes and go to a movie.  The boys appear in their English class the next day only to have the teacher inform them that they missed an important pop quiz.

The four students tell their carefully rehearsed story that they had been on their way to school and experienced a flat tire.  The teacher smiles and announces that they will be given a second chance.  She sends the boys into different corners of the room, gives each one a pencil and a blank sheet of paper, and then announces, "This essay test involves only one question and will determine the final grade in this class.  The question is, 'Which tire was flat?'"

It would be nice if all dishonest behavior was so easily exposed.  To be honest is to value truth and to make every effort to be truthful and fair with others.  Proverbs has a great deal to say about honesty.

Points to build on

It is foolish to think it is fun to trick others to their detriment or for personal gain.  It will only lead to trouble.

Proverbs 10:10:  "He who winks with the eye causes trouble, But a prating fool will fall."

Dishonesty produces deceit.

Proverbs 12:17-20:  "He who speaks truth declares righteousness, But a false witness, deceit.  There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise produces health.  The truthful lip shall be established forever, But a lying tongue is but for a moment.  Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, But counselors of peace have joy."

Dishonesty in a society will destroy it.

Proverbs 29:4:  "The king establishes the land by justice, But he who receives bribes overthrows it."

Dishonesty is rooted in selfishness and greed.

Proverbs 15:27:  "He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live."

Dishonesty is rooted in hatred of others.

Proverbs 26:28:  "A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, And a flattering mouth works ruin."

A proper relationship with God requires honesty.

Proverbs 12:22:  "Lying lips are an abomination the LORD, But those who deal truthfully are His delight."

Application

Honesty is an approach to life that is more than just not telling lies.  Honesty is a desire to be truthful for the benefit of everyone involved.  An honest person must, above all, be honest with himself in his relationship with his Creator for He is the Author of all truth and nothing is hidden from Him.
