Recently I went through a trunk of my toys and such from my childhood. One forgotten treasure I found was the book Mr. Bell’s Fixit Shop by Ronne Peltzman.

Mr. Bell runs a little shop. The sign on the front door says he can fix anything, except broken hearts. A young girl in the neighborhood loves Mr. Bell’s shop and becomes his special helper. One day Jill comes into the shop crying. She had spent the afternoon at her grandmother’s house and her dog had chewed up her favorite doll, Rosie. Mr. Bell tells Jill not to cry and that he will fix Rosie up as good as new. He spends time carving a new leg and arm for the doll, along with making new hair and clothes and painting a red smile on her face.

The next day, Jill is so excited to find Rosie all fixed up. She insists that Mr. Bell change the sign on his front door. By fixing Rosie, Jill says Mr. Bell fixed her broken heart.

Isn’t it nice to know we all have a Mr. Fixit in our lives too? I’m speaking of God, of course. He can fix our hurts in this life now and ultimately one day when Jesus Christ returns and establishes His Kingdom, all of mankind’s broken hearts will be fixed.

Psalm 34:17-18 says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” In this life we can pray to God and ask for His love and encouragement.

Christ’s mission is mentioned in Isaiah 61:1. “The Spirit of the Lord in upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”

This will all come to pass with Christ’s second coming. He will come again to fix all of mankind.
