We hear of terrible incidents of violence that make us fear leaving our homes. Perhaps we feel like barricading ourselves in our houses and never coming out. With the technology that we have today, many of us could do all our shopping and pay our bills online, and we might even find a job working from home.

But does God want us to live in fear? In the Psalms, God gave us this encouraging hope: "The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear" (Psalm 27:1-3).

Staying close to God gives us confidence and peace in an uncertain world so we can go on living our day-to-day lives. We should use the wisdom God gives so that we do not walk "where angels fear to tread," but we don't need to cower in fear.
