But illness can rob us of determination, the will to search for a cure, and the persistence to fight a problem in life. Sincerely wanting to be well is a large part of the cure. It is hard to think that some people could not wish to be well, but there are times when factors like additional attention, rewards we receive, or a stubborn heart will block the true desire to be well. People will remain in their predicament and not take the steps that lead to health.

God clearly set the choice between life and death before Israel (Deuteronomy 30:19). They chose death, and that is hard to understand. Getting better is the result of choosing to live! We must first treasure life and have the courage and determination to correct that which makes life miserable. When the possibility to improve our lives exists, why would we choose to remain ill? Sometimes there is no answer to the question—there is only the wonder at our folly.
