When he is "little" in his own eyes, he will seek wise counsel, check and double check his decisions, and be willing to change when change is clearly warranted. Saul was elevated to the high position of being King of Israel only due to God's work. Had he remembered that, his dynasty may have continued. God did not pick a "loser," He chose a man who could succeed.

But Saul did not remain "little" (1 Samuel 15:17). Like so many leaders, he began to think somehow he was responsible for his position. When men defend their positions and hold on to them at all costs, they can make horrendous errors. The end result is always ruin. The grandson of King David had a chance to change the direction of his rule and the future of Israel by rescinding a law that was onerous and burdensome. But his vanity and pride prevented him, and he lost the nations he was to rule (1 Kings 12:7-11). It is a good thing to take a few moments each day to acknowledge God. Our heart beats, cells pick up what they need and multiply without our permission, all by His design. We need to be aware of God, the first step to being "little."
