Watching our health reflects this attitude, for it is better to pay attention to our health than to have to look for cures when we are sick. That principle works well for spiritual matters, also. It is better to prevent sorrow and misery than to lament and regret the choices we have made.

The Bible teaches us that fearing God and departing from evil—and not being wise in our own eyes—is health to our flesh and strength to our bones (Proverbs 3:7-8). This is not only talking about physical health; it is a metaphor for mental health as well. When we depart from evil and look to the Bible for guidance, we do not choose the paths that lead to regret and sorrow. When we look ahead and foresee danger, we know not to go down that path (Proverbs 22:3). Reading and following the teachings of the Bible is the best preventative medicine for our spiritual health.
