An old song tells us that into each life some rain must fall. The writer then complains that too much is falling in his. We may all have this complaint at some point in our lives, but just as the plants on earth need rain in order to grow, we too need some sorrow in our lives to help us grow. Constant “fun” does not lead to the depth of character that we can develop through trials.

Ecclesiastes 7:3 summarizes this thought when it informs us that sorrow is better than laughter because the heart is made better through sadness. Of course, too much sadness does yield a negative effect, but experiencing need ourselves helps us to grow a strong crop of character that has sympathy and understanding for those in need. Remember that sorrow can make you a better person.
