Gambling is fast becoming a huge business in the casinos of America. The amount of money a person will risk for the potential of having more seems endless. Hope for the pot of gold that is supposed to exist at the end of the rainbow is often the driving force behind the willingness to speculate.

Jesus Christ did not speak against growth and increase—in fact, He stated that it was necessary (Luke 19:20-23). There is a huge difference between investing and gaining slowly and steadily, and putting all you own into a haphazard venture that is highly unlikely to bring success. Mark Twain commented, “There are two times in a man’s life when he should not speculate; when he can’t afford it and when he can.”

Life has many risks for us—knowing how to limit the loss that a risk may incur is where wisdom enters. Careful and wise investments will result in an almost certain gain over the long run—whereas speculation usually takes place in high-risk areas and involves most of our assets in an almost certain loss.
