In the past, workers returned home with aching muscles and a sore back. Today, they return home with their work. We carry our computers and cell phones with us everywhere so that we are always reachable and in touch. We take our worries home with us and our jobs invade every avenue of life.

God tells us to set aside the seventh day of each week to really and truly put our work aside. He calls that day the Sabbath—a holy time, and a period of rest from our normal work (Exodus 20:8-11).

It is easy to get caught up in the belief that we are resting when we are not—and then we lose out on this important gift from God. Even when all we took home were sore, aching muscles, the Sabbath day was welcome. With all our advances since then, still we will never be able to do away with the need—or the command—to rest.
