Life seems to give some people an overdose of sorrow. Tragic event after tragic event overwhelms them, and our hearts go out to them in compassion. Some arrive at the point where they become helpless in their troubles, overwhelmed by a sorrow that dries the bones and breaks the spirit (Proverbs 15:13; 17:22).

This is where we, as brothers and sisters in Christ, can come together to provide strength and assistance. An understanding word, tears of sympathy and a sharing of the burden—all these are ways we can help.

In the moment of His greatest agony, Jesus sought comfort from His disciples and friends (Luke 22:44; Matthew 26:40). They did not grasp the reason for His agony and failed to be of help. Jesus’ request, though, highlights the need for human comfort when our sorrows and trials grow too big to handle.

We can be the comforters others need—provided we first understand their needs.
